Quantitative
In this lesson you will master completing sentences using context and data from a graph or table.
Key Objectives:
Efficiently skim a graph or table to determine what is being conveyed.
Identify the argument being made.
Create a test phrase to summarize the argument.
Prerequisite Knowledge:
Identify variables on x- and y-axes or columns/rows in a table
Recognize trends, such as:
Increasing or decreasing relationships
Linear vs. non-linear changes
Translate between narrative descriptions and quantitative data
Example: “as x increases, y decreases” → match to a graph showing a negative slope
1. Ignore the reading and skim the graph or table most of the time the table or graph will give you a clue as to what the question will be asking about and what trends are explaining in the reading. This will save you time!
2. Go to the question and identify the argument being made. This combined with the first step will allow you to create a test phrase.
3. Create a test phrase or a simple answer to the claim being made based on step 1 and 2.
4. Test the answer choices against your test phrase.
